Carriages and Sleighs: 200 Illustrations from the 1862 Lawrence, Bradley and Pardee Catalog
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (June, 1998)
Authors: Bradley Lawrence, Pardee (Firm) Lawrence, Bradley, Pardee, and Lawrence Bradley & Pardee
Average review score:

Excellent illustrations of 19th century carriages
Includes a wide variety of carriages for all uses, all presumably once available for purchase. Also includes catalog descriptions of each model, somewhat useful in learning about features on each item. Illustrations appear to be stylized a bit, very attractive. No photographs. The best book of its type I have seen so far.

The Case Against Capital
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (August, 2001)
Author: Lawrence Eubank
Average review score:

Don't let the title fool you...
In this important work, Larry Eubank presents a comprehensive (and extremely persuasive) refutation of the major tenets of Marxist Economics. Eubank shows, step-by-step, why everything the political left thinks it knows about the "evils" of capitalism is false.

An insightful work in the tradition of Milton Friedman, F.A. Hayek, and the great Julian Simon, THE CASE AGAINST CAPITAL is a must-read for any serious student of comparative economics.

The Catholic Heritage
Published in Paperback by Wipf & Stock Publishers (March, 2002)
Author: Lawrence Cunningham
Average review score:

Catholic history in an interesting format
This is a wonderful book! It is the history of Catholism arranged by grouping the main "movers and shakers" who have influenced the character and events of the church down through the ages. It is very interesting reading; an overview, certainly, but with witty comentary and a really excellent bibliography for further study at the end of each chapter. It is worth having for the information on "where to find more information" alone! I recommend it highly for the neophyte or the scholar.

Celebrating Chinese New Year
Published in School & Library Binding by Holiday House (September, 1998)
Authors: Diane Hoyt-Goldsmith and Lawrence Migdale
Average review score:

Wonderful intro to the traditions of the Chinese New Year
I purchased this book when my son's first grade teacher asked me to come and and talk to the class about the Chinese New Year. This book was perfect first of all because of its bright and bold color photos. By following a young Chinese boy living in San Francisco's Chinatown you learn how a typical contemporary Chinese family prepares for and celebrates the Chinese New Year. The topics include the special Chinese foods eaten on this day and their symbolism, paying respect to ancestors, Chinese calligraphic decorations, animals of the Chinese zodiac, and of course the lion dance and New Year parade. Children will be especially fascinated by all the splendid and exotic foods listed in the family's New Year's menu. This is a wonderful book to introduce children and adults alike to the traditions and customs of the Chinese New Year.

Celebrating Kwanzaa
Published in School & Library Binding by Holiday House (September, 1993)
Authors: Diane Hoyt-Goldsmith and Lawrence Migdale
Average review score:

An excellent resource for learning about this holiday.
This book is an excellent resource for those learning about this relatively new African American holiday. Middle to upper elementary students (3rd-6th) will find it chock full of clearly written information, including the history, traditions, symbols and activities that make up the Kwanzaa celebration. Teachers can use this book to benefit lower elementary students by using the many superb photographs and paraphrasing the text. Pronunciation is given immediately following difficult words making read-aloud a cinch. The tone is positive and uplifting throughout. This book is on my Christmas wish list.

Celebrating Soul: Preparing for the New Religion (Studies in Jungian Psychology by Jungian Analysts)
Published in Paperback by Inner City Books (July, 1999)
Author: Lawrence W. Jaffe
Average review score:

Profound, prophetic and transparent.
Jaffe's "Celebrating Soul" is a masterpiece of defining clarity of Jung's brooding labor over human consciousness and future of the human race. Admitting that he reads Jung to be " reawakened to a realm of meaning" often forgotten in the pressing "drama of daily life" puts one in direct contact with the spirit of this book.

Centered Living: The Way of Centering Prayer
Published in Paperback by Liguori Publications (September, 1999)
Authors: M. Basil Pennington, Michael T. Moran, and Lawrence Kushner
Average review score:

An Excellent Reappraisal
After two decades of practicing Eastern meditation, I found what I felt was missing, thanks to Centering Prayer: the presence of the Personhood of God. (I'd grown tired of mind traps and fruitless stillness, and methods emphasing words, breath control, where meditation really degenerated into my clinging to basically repetitive superstitious gesture. Actually, I'm grateful for such experience because it helps me avoid such things in practicing Centering Prayer). The humble, insightful M. Basil Pennington and his colleagues offer a work that is conversational, not didactic. This book boldly asserts the reality of a loving God. All those years I'd focused on the Void, the Impersonal, an inner Something, Someone, kept prodding me, which I initially rejected as old Catholic-school training that was re-surfacing. Now, for me, the big Drawing Card is that the Divine Person glows as the crux, the heart, the very beauty, of this book. Also, Rabbi Kushner, in his foreword, speaks poignantly on becoming one with God as a "Heart Person" in life. So many insightful people, from many spiritual paths have generously contributed to this book. I'm grateful for it.

A Certain Protocol
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (April, 1975)
Author: Lawrence. Robbins
Average review score:

Patrick Kennedy O"Toole meets Schopenhauer
Robbins is fast, funny and hits hard. You might not think a really warped, alcohol prone depressive can be funny, but think again. Why haven't we heard more from this talented guy? Is he still alive?
